Hunt Camp Trail

Work is complete on the Upper Hunt Camp Trail. This trail is open to visitors. Due to the sensitive nature of the ecosystem, all work was done with hand tools.

As originally proposed, this project consisted of three parts: improvements to Upper Hunt Camp Trail, improvements to Lower Hunt Camp Trail, and a connector trail. The project was identified as a priority project in the 2015 road and trail designation process.

A section of Upper Hunt Camp, formerly a narrow and unimproved ridgetop trail, was re-routed and the grade improved to create a more stable and sustainable trail. The highly erosive portions of trail were decommissioned. Drainage improvements were also implemented to alleviate chronically wet conditions and reduce erosion.

There is currently no timeline for the Lower Hunt Camp part of the project.

The Marin County Open Space District (MCOSD) published the Hunt Camp Trail Improvement Project Description and Fact Sheet on April 13, 2017. The MCOSD solicited comments from the community during a 30-day administrative public comment period that ended May 15, 2017. 134 comments were received.

On October 3, 2015 the MCOSD hosted a community workshop in Lagunitas on proposed projects in Region 2 to solicit comments and feedback on trail designations and priorities in the region. Following the workshop, the public had an opportunity to view and comment on the proposed road and trail system for Region 2, including the Hunt Camp Trail projects.

The Marin County Open Space District (MCOSD) prepared an evaluation which determined that pursuant to California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) Section 15162, the 2014 Road and Trail Management Plan Environmental Impact Report adequately analyzed the proposed project, and the project did not require subsequent environmental review. The MCOSD filed a notice of determination with the Marin County Clerk and the state office of Planning and Research on July 12, 2017, in compliance with CEQA.
