Mission & Services

Marin County Parks is dedicated to educating, inspiring, and engaging the people of Marin in the shared commitment of preserving, protecting, and enriching the natural beauty of Marin's parks and open spaces, and providing recreational opportunities for the enjoyment of all generations.

Operations &
Maintenance

  • Maintains safe and sustainable parks, preserves and landscape areas.
  • Assists and educates visitors to parks and preserves.
  • Monitors conditions of facilities, land, landscape areas, and natural resources.
  • Coordinates with County Service Areas (CSAs).
  • Manages Integrated Pest Management (IPM).
  • Enforces Parks and Open Space District codes.

Conservation Science & Projects

  • Manages wildland fire science strategies and programs, in coordination with regional fire agencies.
  • Monitors and reports on wildlife, plant communities, and ecosystems.
  • Develops strategies to control invasive vegetation while minimizing herbicide use.
  • Guides regional trail planning, improvements, and habitat restoration.
  • Coordinates collaborative research projects.
  • Coordinates landscape architecture design, project management, and oversight.

Planning, Real Property, & Government Affairs

  • Manages land acquisitions and real estate agreements.
  • Manages conservation and trail easements.
  • Fulfills environmental review and permitting requirements.
  • Undertakes long-range planning for programs and projects, such as sea level rise adapation.
  • Supports legislative initiatives for parks and open space.
  • Develops partnerships that connect people to parks.
  • Coordinates Measure A community grants.

Communications & Interpretation

  • Provides public information about Marin County parks and preserves.
  • Promotes opportunities for community engagement and the work of the department.
  • Coordinates and supports free naturalist walks, ranger-led activities, and other public events.
  • Coordinates sign program.
  • Maintains information streams about Parks in a variety of media channels.

Administration &
Finance

  • Develops annual budgets.
  • Manages all aspects of Parks department finances and accounting functions.
  • Prepares materials for boards and commissions.
  • Participates in annual financial audits.
  • Provides in-person customer service to members of the public.
  • Manages payroll.

Governance

Marin County Parks reports regularly to four county-wide boards and commissions, including the Marin County Board of Supervisors. Parks staff also consult regularly with five regional boards and councils. Parks properties are governed by Marin County Municipal Code, Title 10. Open space preserves are regulated by Marin County Open Space District Code, found in Marin County Municipal Code, Appendix A.
